Halloween Fun and Election Day

Dear Big Room Families,

Here are a few pictures of our fantastic Halloween day. We had a fabulous party and probably a little too much candy :). There are also some pictures of the students voting at Alta Elementary. The students did an excellent job of researching both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney and made an informed decision when they voted.

This week the students will wrap up unit one for reading and the students will have an assessment encompassing visualization, predications, setting, and characterization. Students will also need to identify various kinds of sentences such as simple sentences, compound sentences, and compound predicates--tough stuff, but I know they can do it.

We have started to write memoirs. Last week the students had an excellent discussion, that involved a ton of higher-level thinking on what makes a good introduction in a memoir. We will work on implementing that into our writing as well as using figurative language appropriately.

In math, both 4th and 6th graders will start a new unit. 4th graders will start to learn about decimals and there use, while 6th graders will learn about variable, formulas, and graphs. 5th graders will continue to work on geometric concepts and will have an assessment at the end of the following week.

Enjoy the pictures and have a fantastic week!!!!

Happy Halloween

Weekly Newsletter

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a great 3 day weekend! This week is fast and furious. We will continue to look at character traits in reading by looking at characters in spooky stories and by looking at the traits of our presidential candidates. After this, students will break apart into two teams and come up with their own presidential candidates. They will make up traits based on domestic and foreign policy and we will have a mock debate along with an election next Monday and Tuesday.

In math:
4th graders will work on number sentences,
5th graders will start a new unit on geometry,
6th graders will continue to work on scientific notation and expanded form. They will have a test next week.

We are going to put a halt on writing this week and work on our data binders in order to get ready for parent teacher conferences next week. On that note, I am sending home a letter today indicating your time. Please read the letter, let me know if the time we selected for you is okay, and send it back with your child tomorrow.

Wednesday is our Halloween party. That starts at 1:00--feel free to stop in if you like.

Hope you all have a great week!

Smile,
Mrs. Chudzik

Weekly Updates

Dear Parents and Students,

Last week we finished off the week by celebrating Vancy and all she had done for Alta Elementary. It was a wonderful way to end the day. Your children wrote beautiful poems about Vancy and shared these with her at the celebration.

We also had Deputy Carr from Jackson come and speak to us about, "stranger danger". This is in light of the recent kidnappings that have happened both in Colorado and Wyoming. I would encourage you to have a conversation about this with your children as well.

We have a busy week this week:

In reading we will start to analyze characters. We will look at character traits and protagonist along with antagonist in various stories. The reading homework will coincide with this.

Thank you to all of you that were able to come to the author's celebration. We are wrapping up small moments by assessing the students on a small moment writing prompt. We will start our new genre of writing which is memoir.

In math 6th graders will continue to work on decimal multiplication, and division of both whole numbers and decimals.

In 5th grade the students will be tested on Unit 2 Estimation and Computation. This will cover estimating, addition and subtraction of whole and decimal numbers, number stories, multiplication of whole numbers and decimals, and place value.

4th graders will continue to work on multiplication and division along with looking at data.

Remember our PTO chili night is October 25th. Come support Alta Elementary!!!

Hope you all have a wonderful week.

Smile,

Mrs. Chudzik

Weekly Updates

Dear Parents and Students,

I hope everyone had a great week. This kids did a really nice job of visualizing and more importantly, by the end of the week, I think they started to understand the importance of visualizing when reading stories.

Next week, we will start to look at setting and characters. More specifically, students will learn about traits of characters and how to identify if a character is flat, dynamic, or round.

We did not finish our publishing yet, my hope is that we can celebrate the students work on Tuesday. I will send out an email to confirm this.

When we are finished with our publishing of small moments, we are going to take a break between small moments and memoirs and focus on poetry. It is my goal by the end of the week,  that students have some knowledge of poetry terms such as alliteration, similes, metaphors, figurative language, and imagery. Along with this, I would like them to incorporate this into their own poetry. Students will share their poetry on Friday at Vancy's celebration.

On that note, make sure that if you are available, you join us on Friday at 1:30 to celebrate all that Vancy has done for our school and the children.

Last, in math, both 4th and 5th graders will be working on place value and multiplication methods. 6th graders will be learning how to multiply decimals, and divide whole numbers along with decimals.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend--enjoy these last beautiful days!

Smile,
Mrs. Chudzik

Multi-Grade School Wide Project

Bi-annually the teachers lead a multi-grade school wide project. Often this project is a year long experience with a culminating project at the end of the year.  Past projects include a CD release with western music written by our students with local song writer Mike Hurwitz, a global art exchange with seven other countries around the world, a community fingersmear with artist Kelly Sullivan, a poetry performance with Poetry Alive, a 3D art gallery with local photographers Dondi and Joe Tondro-Smith, and more.  The teachers are currently selecting their ideas for this project.  If you have an idea that you would like to propose to the staff please do so in a short paragraph (with as much detail as needed, as well as contact information for artists whom may be interested in assisting) by Wednesday of next week, Oct. 17th. The teachers have some great ideas in the works already, but we are always open to the great ideas of the community.  Thank you, The Alta Staff

5th graders will continue to work on number notation and adding/subtracting whole numbers and decimals.
